Conan The Barbarian (2011): A Dissapointment
The original Conan The Barbarian movie was portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger it was an epic movie. The masculinity of the whole, the strong aura of a barbarian, the cinematography, and of course the musical theme which definitely matched the movie. All the Conan series; I mean done by Arnold Schwarzenegger was a major hit. So this 2011 there is a remake of the said movie which Arnold Schwarzenegger portray. The title is still the same but the difference is Arnold is not the Conan here, but Jason Mamoa.
Ok we went to the movie to watched this film because it is Conan The Barbarian; when I was a kid I idolized this movie because of the barbaric and brute scenes. Ok, we are already at the ticket booth. The only available in this movie is in 3d; wait no 2d? Ok, we bought the ticket and hoping that we will be impressed by the new Conan movie. Well I was wrong about it.
Conan The Barbarian (2011) - Story
Khalar Zym had a goal of reviving his dead wife in order to conquer the world. In order to do that he must obtain the pieces of the said helm which has been shattered many years ago by his enemies and a clean blood of an ancient race which in a body of a lady monk. One of the piece of the said helm was kept by Conan's father at the sacred shrine on their village. Then the Khalar Zym went to Conan's village to get the last fragment of the said helm. So Conan was on the verge of revenge. Traveled many places and islands to seek the one who killed his father when he was a kid. So Khalar Zym got the pieces and was put together, plus the capture of Tamara which is the sacrificial lamb. At the end Conan killed Khalar Zym plus his daughter Marique; which looks like the Red Queen in the movie Alice In The Wonderland starring Johnny Depp.
Disapointment of the movie. The story is too short; the old Conan played by Arnold is long but very good; I mean very good, in other words there is a substance or an essence to the movie itself. The movie emphasized more on the 3-d effects which some part of the movie you can see the effects rather than the investing on the story of the movie itself. The other thing that I find wierd the battle scene in the ship which is a junk; an old chinese wooden ship used until now in hong kong, overruled the bandits and they are screaming for victory as if the story ended there.
I do not know if the monk already taste blood because if you will observe the monk got skills; at least the producer of the movie revives the rouge just like in Arnold's movie. More frontal scenes compared to the old one wow they prioritized the meaning of nomad then. And the robin type of thing that he did; the scene where he released the slaves from their captive it is not so Conan, it is more of a Braveheart movie.
Conan The Barbarian (2011) - Scenes and Effects
Another thing that I was disapointed are the scenes in the movie. They focused more on 3-d effects rather than the real thing; if you observe the scenes in the movie, think you are playing God Of War on Playstation3. The old Conan if you will observe is vast, so open; you can feel that Conan is exploring a vast land get his revenge. When I watch the movie, I felt the scenes are so narrow; so small, so many shortcuts that you do not understand.
Smashing things is the best in this movie. You will see many things destroyed. More gorey compared to the old one even though it is already exaggerate.
Music that they used to the new Conan the Barbarian; I rather go with an orchestra used in the old Conan movie; you can feel the essence of being a barbarian compare to the new one, more of a heavy metal music. Feels like you are watching a modern action movie. Not fit with the movie itself.
Hands down to the computer-effects, that is one thing that the movie has compared to the 80's movie.
Conan The Barbarian (2011) - Actor and Actress
Jason Mamoa does fit the role of Conan here, that is one thing that I can say about the movie itself. For me Arnold Schwarzenegger still the one fits the Conan role same in comics. The actor lacks the brute presence and power which Arnold delivered in the old Conan. The thief also, a kingpin? Compare to the old one.
Khalar Zym in the movie lacks the presence of being a formidable warlord; nothing beats the old one.
Overall the failed to deliver what the old Conan movie did before. From the producer to the director they lack the creativity. I hope the people who are involved in this movie does not have plans to do a remake of Red Sonja. Seven years in the making only to be given a low remarks.
